Investigation: How Absence Of Street Lights Is Killing Evening Businesses In Ekiti

Streets of Ado Ekiti, the capital city of Ekiti state are being deserted at night over absence of street lights at night and this is killing economic activities in this time of the day.
Some residents of major roads in the capital city experiencing absence of streets light in their areas have cried out to the state Government to do something in time and restore the streets lights from Fajuyi Area to Basiri and to the Police Headquarters Area of the Ekiti State Capital.

Some Shop and business owners located along the road between Fajuyi Area and the Ekiti State Police Command Headquarters Area complained bitterly on Tuesday night over the absence of streets light in their areas for over three weeks. Business owners in the area like food sellers, provisions sellers, beer parlors among others lamented about poor sales since the street lights have not been switched on.

Speaking with PMParrot/Parrot Xtra in Ado Ekiti, one of the shop owners who refused to give her name said businesses in the area have been very boring and badly affected as a result of the street lights not in place. “When there are street lights, we normally make good sales but now, sales are no longer encouraging. People always like to come out in the night and play around when there is street lights at night. There are times I won’t operate my electricity generator and we would still be able to make enough sales. But now, it is no longer so.

“We normally make good sales when the street lights are on. We used to stay till around 10pm or even 11pm at times when the street lights are on. It’s over three weeks that the streets have been off. People are no longer willing to come out in the night because of the absence of streets lights. We will love our government led by Dr Kayode Fayemi to do something urgent so that the streets lights can be restored – especially now that we are approaching the 2019 festive period”, she noted.
